What we do

We realize that there are thousands of competent and amazing STEM / educational outreach organizations around the country that each on their own, already access ten to hundreds of thousands of students annually.

Our purpose is to support those organizations by providing them with an energilab™ mobile laboratory and openenergi™ web-based platform (curriculum and open-source energy production / use monitor) which enables the energilab™ hardware.

We serve non-profit, for profit, schools and any organization that is committed to empowering all youth interested in learning and expanding their knowledge base in the domain of their greatest passion.

Mobile interactive STEM Laboratory

STudents produce the energy to power their own classroom

energilab’s mobile laboratory success is largely due to the fact that all the activities are derived from and have evolved from the ideas of students and users. And this is how energilab will continue to expand its offering - empowering students to create the most effective and more importantly, fun interactive energilab STEM learning activities. This opens up the opportunity to ALL students by eliminating STEM intimidation and funding the unique passion in EVERY student.

Cirriculum Lesson Plans

openenergi curriculum is a STEAM based platform designed under Next Generation Science Standards. It enables all the energilab activities and more. energilab users have access to this curriculum. A light version of openenergi curriculum is open access to the public.

All energilab’s energy producing systems collect scientific data such as energy produced by students on the energy bikes or Solar PV system data. This live data is utilized in the curriculum lessons.

Community Project Platform

The Back side of energilab is reserved for a project based STEAM program envisioned, created & run by students in collaboration with or for local community. Some examples of what the students / community are choosing: Food distribution program center, Maker Space, Fix-it Center…

Our core values

Having Fun– When students are really having fun and playing, they forget they are learning when in fact, they are learning in a deeper way ever imaginable.

Empowerment- Student-lead learning empowering Students to follow their passions through authentic inquiry, collaboration, communication, and flexibility in the learning by doing process.

Opportunity Gap - Addressing the opportunity gap and leveling the playing field-across race lines, gender lines, academic achievement, SES and more.

Movement - through Fun and engaging Play (directly addressing obesity, diabetes and attention issues)

Problem-solving STEM - opportunities such as embracing “failure”, peer to peer support and expanding STEM into disciplines such as entrepreneurship, art and physiology that prepare students for their ever-changing real-world future and jobs.

No additional load on Teachers & Schools - Make it simple for any teacher (regardless of teaching skill level) to teach lessons / concepts. Finding funding partners to make energilab accessible to all schools.

It all Started When….

energy Day Casey Middle school 2011 cropped.jpg

…. my Boulder-based Solar Company, Simple Solar started installing solar systems on schools. We quickly realized that there was a disconnect between the solar system and the students. In many cases, students didn’t realize that there was a solar system on the school.

In effort to integrate energy into the curriculum, we decided to hold an “Energy Day” program on the day that we flipped the switch to turn on the solar system. We got the entire school body involved while one class lead the energy learning activities which consisted of a solar oven and a solar-powered bubble machine.

Over the years, through the direct input from many kids, students & teachers, energilab evolved into a large array of fun activities including a fleet of 12 energibikes directly coupled to a large-scale DJ dance party sound system, pedal powered lights displays, ice-cream machines, student powered Chromebook charging stations, piezoelectric dance floors and much more…

From our partners…

For years we have been lucky enough to have Joe Callahan and energilab a part of our Boulder Public Library Summer Reading Program Celebration. Our musicians have been powered by his stationary bikes and our cyclists have been fortified by his amazing SOLAR COOKIES!
Joe brings such awesome interactive opportunities to our community. He is also a ball of happiness himself.  You should check them out (library humor) straight-away.

Energilab was incorporated in our annual Denver Police Halloween Event at our Police Training Academy. Our younger guests were extremely amused by the bikes and were eager to peddle faster as they learned that the energy from the bikes powered the awesome sound system. The children were so entertained that adults eventually joined in as well. Energilab definitely made a huge impact on the success of the Halloween Event
